Slovak National Library in Martin (SNL) is the oldest, biggest and most important one in the field of science in Slovakia. Almost 190 years it keeps the works which document actual and former spiritual and material growth of the Slovak nation. As the national library of Slovak Republic is nowadays a modern, cultural, informative and education institution. It serves all the Slovak citizens and foreign users. General seat of Slovak National Library is in Martin, in the building which was built for the use of library in the years of 1963 – 1975. Till the years of 1850 it was just a try of individuals to make a collection of Slovak literature works. Slovak National Library has its own symbolism. Suggestions on symbols of the establishment comes from the demand on historical continuity and demand on expressing the uniqueness and monumentality of the national and state character of the institution. Primary demand on the symbolism of SNL did Dušan Katuščák.
